Jeep Liberty Air Bags Randomly Inflate

After some 50 people have reported being injured by an air bag in the Jeep Liberty SUV, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is seeking to find the cause.  In these cases the air bags inflated even though the vehicle wasn't involved in a crash.

Federal regulators began investigating these vehicles made by Chrysler Group LLC, performing a full engineering analysis.  The model years of 2002 and 2003 are being scrutinized, which means nearly 387,000 vehicles are under investigation.

Fortunately, no deaths have occurred, but drivers have reported burns, cuts, and bruises.  The incidents have taken place both when starting the vehicle and when driving.  In about half of the cases, both the driver and the passenger air bags were inflated.

According to NHTSA documents, Chrysler found that the airbag computer control chip might be failing due to a voltage spike.
